Madras Middle School recently held the final round of its year-long Battle of the Books, with the sixth-grade Team Macaws winning the Grand Championship.

Grand Champions were sixth-graders, from left, Addie Burford, Bobbie Gilham and Miranda Aycock.

All 300 students who participated throughout the year were invited to attend the finals, which were held in the school gym. Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for all students in grades 6-8 at Madras

Participating students were given a list of 10 books to read, and they teamed up to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of those books in a trivia-style competition. Competing teams of three to four students answered questions about reading selections from the list of books, and points were awarded for identifying which book the selection was from. Students formed their own teams in their ELA classes or with other students on their grade level.

The first round of competition was held in January and featured 76 teams sponsored by Madras teachers. At the end of this competition, each teacher’s winning team was announced and those teams advanced to the second round of competition in February.

At the end of that competition, a grade-level winner from sixth, seventh and eighth grades advanced to the final.

Winning teams received trophies, Scholastic Book Fair gift certificates, and a pizza party. First place Team Macaw members were Addie Burford, Bobbie Gilham and Miranda Aycock, sponsored by teacher Peggy Davenport.

The second place team was Angela Rembert’s Team Indecisive, including members McGinley Gore, Kaili Moore, Avery Sleigh and Jessie Johnstone. In third place was Maria Meza’s seventh-grade team, The Page Turners, which included Larissa Martin, Jenna Loper, Emily Shay and Kate Harris.
