Nothing is final, but the former Sprayberry’s on Highway 34 could soon be inhabited by The Varsity.

According to a deed transfer filed with the Coweta County Clerk, the 5,152-square-foot facility was sold to the Evelyn and Frank Gordy Family Limited Partnership on Aug. 29.

The late Frank Gordy opened in the first Varsity restaurant on North Avenue near Georgia Tech in 1928.

Varsity Vice-President John Browne confirmed the purchase of the property but said the company has no immediate plans for the development of the location.

“For decades, our family has purchased parcels of land throughout the region where we see long-term value,” Browne said. “The Sprayberry’s BBQ location off Highway 34 in Newnan is a great property in a wonderful town.

“While we have no current plans for the site, we continue to look for strategic areas of growth for The Varsity,” Browne continued. “We appreciate all of the interest in our growth and encourage people to visit any of our five existing locations.”

The Sprayberry’s location on Highway 34 closed last week after nearly 25 years in business.
