A stretch of Hwy. 16 will be dedicated to Jimmy Buren Lassetter.
During their general assembly term this past spring, Georgia legislators authorized that the stretch of Georgia 16 from its intersection with Old Carrollton Road to the Chattahoochee River be designated as Jimmy Lassetter Memorial Highway.
The highway designation honors Lassetter, a lifelong Newnan resident who was well known for working for many years with his family businesses, Lassetter Transport, Coweta Gas Company, Troup County Gas Company, and Meriwether Gas Company,
He eventually started his own company, Lassetter Propane, in Cedartown.
He was known as a compassionate man within his community and his church, Unity Baptist Church, and this urge to help others reached its culmination when he tragically was killed in 2012 at age 45, after entering a burning building to help a person trapped on a forklift.
Friday, signage will be erected to mark the memorial highway and a small ceremony will be held at Sargent Baptist Church, 467 Sargent Main Street at 10 a.m.
