The 28 teams of the Senoia Area Athletic Association gathered at Leroy Johnson Park for opening day.
“We ask for one thing to represent Senoia, that is to play hard and have fun,” Matthew Bennett, president of the Senoia Area Athletic Association, said to the kids.
“What these kids do and what these parents do is what I’m here for,” said Jim Gay, the director of the Coweta County Recreation Department. “I was blown away by the effort the board and volunteers put in here.”
Three of the teams were girls softball teams, which were reintroduced to SAAA. According to Bennett, SAAA had softball teams three years ago but were discontinued.
“Softball was away for three years but we brought it back,” he said at the Saturday kickoff event.
Registration for the softball teams opened last fall and interest in the teams spread by word-of-mouth and surveys, which resulted in the three full teams to be formed, said Bennett.
“Our program is growing. We have more than 300 kids,” he said.
According to Bennett, the SAAA teams will compete against neighboring teams from Brooks, Peachtree City and Fayetteville.
“This is just a growing, great area with great kids and parental involvement,” Bennett said.
