Check-ins: * KL0UD Chris, net control * N4HIC John * N4TEZ Ann, by relay * W8PY Ellis * KI4WNA Sam * KJ4AOR Alan * KC4KRY Tom * AK4MC Kevin, by relay Announcements: W8PY: A Tech license course was conducted this weekend at The Heritage School for eight local Boy Scouts who previously took part in a ham radio merit badge project that was also put on by BGMRC. Seven candidates passed their tests and will be issued amateur radio licenses. Also testing at today's session was one of the scoutmasters who upgraded to General. Thanks to David Benoist AG4ZR and two VEs from his team for coming to Newnan to administer the tests. KL0UD: The net will need someone to take over as net control on Feb. 17 and Feb. 24 since KL0UD will be working and out of town, respectively, those nights. One ham on the net said he would check to see if he could take one or possibly both of those nights. KL0UD: Tonight's net was being billed as the "BGMRC net" because there is a change taking place in the ARES situation for Fayette and Coweta counties, with the two organizations in the process of merging. This is a recent decision between the ECs in the two counties and the Georgia SEC in hopes of revitalizing local ARES operations. More details will be forthcoming soon, and the net script will be revised to reflect this change. The net concluded at 2110 hrs. The Coweta ARES reflector will no longer be used (the CowetaARES.org website domain will be going away and taking the reflector with it) -- instead, Coweta hams are encouraged to sign up for the Yahoo! Group "fcga-ares," which has stood for "Fayette County GA" but will now mean "Fayette-Coweta GA." For now, http://www.FayetteARES.org will be serving the new combined Fayette-Coweta ARES until we get a new domain name. There's more information about the merger at the fcga-ares Yahoo! However, in some cases there are a number of two, three, and in few cases (primarily South Georgia) multiple county ARES groups. An example would be the Douglas/Paulding County ARES group. This is done to combine smaller ARES memberships into a single larger ARES group to create larger memberships and combine resources. The Coweta County ARES group has been folded into the Fayette ARES membership making it a two county group to create the Fayette/Coweta ARES group. Coweta's present ARES membership is very small and it is the Section leadership's objective to revive growth and interest in ARES activities. The current Coweta Emergency Coordinator is Chris McGehee (KL0UD). Some of you already know Chris from her work at the National Weather Service. Chris will continue in her role acting as an Assistant Emergency Coordinator. I will be meeting with her to do some planning and organizing. At this point we are in the "primordial soup" stage of planning on what to plan. I envision, at this point, that Coweta ARES members will start coming to ARES meetings and participating in the Tuesday night net. This net has already evolved into a multi-repeater net covering Fayette and Pike Counties and the Skywarn hub repeater with check-ins from other areas from metro to rural. I like to give the sense that all amateurs, ARES and non-ARES alike are welcome. I frankly think the future of Amateur Radio with its declining numbers depends more on cohesive activities to stay active. I will try to move ARES meetings around to different locations. However, this not so much by choice as it is trying to find a place to meet but I will try to facilitate meeting in different locations, as we do with the FCARC Eatin-Meetings, so that some do not have to travel consistently to more distant meeting locations. Please welcome ARES members from Coweta and introduce yourselves when they appear at ARES meetings. As things develop I will let you know in updates. Comments, discussion, ideas, ponderances, etc. are welcome. Feel free to call. Thanks. This is a copy of what I posted to the Fayette ARES / 521 group reflectors. I will be looking for volunteers in a few weeks, but I want everyone to get it on their calendars. Thanks, Sam KD4SHK Huey KI4NGD and I attended the Peachtree City March of Dimes Walk-a-Thon organizational meeting yesterday (Friday) with representatives of the March of Dimes, Kiwanis Club, Police Dept, Fire/EMS, Public Works, Recreation Dept. and City Hall. Several attendees (Police and March of Dimes representatives) graciously thanked the Hams for assisting, noting how much of a help they have been over the years. Capt Pye with the Police Dept noted that the Hams "really saved our butt" two years ago when so many walkers got off the course. There are several changes from last year, several of which were a direct result of the Ham volunteers' suggestions: - The route will be shorter. It will be 3.1 miles, vs. last year's 6.2miles. - Due to the shorter route, the # of checkpoints will probably be reduced to only two. - The route will not reverse itself (walkers won't be going both directions on the route). - All path intersections will be marked with signs, clearly marking the route. - A separate "kids area" should reduce the number of younger kids running throughout the festival area. The number of walkers is expected to be noticeably larger than last year, partially due to the shorter route. Last year they had approx 375, this year well over 400 are expected. The start time has changed as well. Last year was 10:00 am, this year the walk will start at 9:30, with registration beginning at 8 am. The Hams have been requested to provide the following assistance this year: - Net Control / Assistant at Headquarters w/ event staff. - Sweep vehicle (golf cart which trails the last walker). - Communications for SAG vehicles (3 or 4 golf carts which patrol the route, looking for walkers in need of assistance). - One Ham at each Checkpoint (2). Golf carts will be provided by the staff. I would like to utilize APRS to track the Sweep vehicle and the SAG's. I have a "base" setup and one tracker, but need 2-3 more trackers. If anyone has one, please let me know. So, we'll need approximately 8-10 Hams to assist with the event. Since it starts earlier, and has a shorter route than last year, it should conclude before noon. Please put this on your calendars (Saturday, April 26th). In about a month, I'll start taking volunteers. If anyone has any recommendations on how to make the event run smoother or safer, please let me know. The event staff have been very receptive to our suggestions. 73, Sam Smith KD4SHK kd4shk@arrl.net From mcgehee.ak4mc at gmail.com Tue Feb 26 22:36:44 2008 From: mcgehee.ak4mc at gmail.com (Kevin McGehee) Date: Tue Feb 26 22:37:06 2008 Subject: [Bgmrc-list] February meeting was not called to order Message-ID: <47C4DACC.6020606@gmail.com> I've been senior officer present twice since becoming a club officer, and neither time have I needed to actually conduct a meeting.
