These are the three courses that are required to be an approved emergency responder (Georgia ARES requires them too). Basically, they teach us about the Incident Command System and the National Integration Center Incident Management System, which are the chain-of-command structures used by emergency management. We need to know how these things work so that we can participate in emergency operations more effectively. You can read through the course material at the FEMA website, and take the test for each one online -- most people can complete all of them in an evening or two. But Lynn's fast-track course "hits the highlights" and helps you get ready for the test more quickly. Then, you can just go home, take the online tests, and you're done. Here are a few links about the individual courses: http://www.fema.gov/pdf/emergency/nims/ics_100_fs.pdf http://www.fema.gov/pdf/emergency/nims/ics_200_fs.pdf http://www.fema.gov/pdf/emergency/nims/ics_700_fs.pdf If anyone has additional questions, please let me know. 73, Chris KL0UD ----- Forwarded message from tomcot@juno.com ----- Date: Fri, 05 Oct 2007 12:20:54 +0000 From: tomcot@juno.com Reply-To: tomcot@juno.com Subject: Re: [Bgmrc-list] fast-track NIMS courses (per KN4YZ) To: kl0udchris@mcgehee.cc Since I have to ask, it's probably over my head. That was a problem discussed at the last meeting -- it's got all kinds of bogus dates in there right now. There are only a few people who know how to change the repeater announcements, and unfortunately I ain't one of them, yet. Anyone else know how to fix this? However I've posted a summary of some things that were discussed by those of us who were there, at http://bgmrc.blogspot.com/ Two new members were present tonight. Sam KI4WNA -- who was a ham many years ago, lapsed, and recently earned a new ticket -- paid his BGMRC dues at the club's booth at the Coweta County Fair. Scott, who doesn't have his call yet because he just passed for Technician at last Sunday's VE session, joined up tonight. We hope to see more of them both at future meetings and events. Chris KL0UD is looking into finding a place for the December eating meeting, which will probably be another of those potluck dinners that have been such a hit in the past. Don't forget about the NIMS workshop Thursday night in Fayetteville. This will cover -- quickly -- material for the ARES-required incident command system courses. Hitch a ride (via the repeater or the email reflector) if you need one. Someplace that's centrally located in the county would be good if possible (didn't get to the point of discussing locations with the person on the phone today). I was guesstimating about 30 people. We used the Panther Creek Community Center a few years ago, and that was a nice size for the group. If we've paid the rental fee in the past, it's no big deal. I just don't see any evidence of it in the bank records back thru 2004, so I was concerned about committing us to the expenditure if it wasn't expected.
